I have over 35 years of experience in various areas of human service as an administrator, supervisor, case manager, researcher, and trainer. As a social work practitioner, my career spans the fields of mental health, juvenile justice, substance abuse, and youth services with local, state, and national recognition in the field of child, youth, and family services.
I am President/CEO of Ujima Consortium, Inc. (UCI), a 501(c)3 non-profit corporation, I founded in 1984 and incorporated in 1989 for the purpose of providing training and programs for strengthening and preservation of African and African American families. UCI is currently involved with efforts to address health disparities locally, nationally, and throughout the African diaspora. We have assisted in the development of numerous business ventures in West Africa, and currently provide support for an AIDS clinic for women and children in Guediawaye, Senegal.
Most recently I was responsible for the overall planning, development, implementation, and monitoring of the Office of Minority Health funded African American Male Health Initiative within the Michigan Department of Community Health’s Health Disparities Reduction and Minority Health Section.
I previously served as interim Chief Executive Officer and President of a multi-county interfaith, community-based elder health care network prior to 5 years as Contract Manager for one of the largest African American non-profit organizations in Metropolitan Detroit, and 13 years as Executive Director of a Detroit crisis intervention and counseling agency that served African American children, at-risk youth, and their families.
I am a long-standing member and current Vice President of the National Association of Black Social Workers, Inc., as well as a graduate of its’ Academy of African Centered Social Work, and Sankofa Mentorship Program. I was a recipient of the Distinguished Service Award (Social Worker of the Year), and Presidential Award.
I have traveled to over 20 countries throughout the African diaspora. In 1997 I launched Sankofa Arts LLC to promote African cultural awareness through African art, and education. In 2005, I co-founded African Men’s Excellence Network (AMEN), a multi-faceted, grass-root program initiative of UCI that is committed to the promotion of cultural, educational, moral, and, social excellence.
Thanks for joining. I created the coalition to provide a forum where the practitioners/facilitators, scholars, educators, students/initiates and parents can discuss and promote the African centered rites of passage process. Along with this networking site, please visit the CACRoP web site at:
